Tamko Kitchen Remodeling: The Austin Owner’s Guide

If you’ve got a Tamko product in your kitchen that’s failing or already failed, here’s the straight answer: we stock and install Tamko-compatible kitchen remodeling components across Austin, and full kitchen remodels involving Tamko replacement work typically run $14,000 to $45,000 installed. Most Austin homeowners discover the problem the hard way: a cabinet door that won’t stay aligned, a counter seam that’s opened up from a year of Texas humidity swings, or laminate surfacing that’s delaminated near the dishwasher. Whatever the symptom, the fix starts with identifying exactly what failed and whether the rest of the assembly is still worth saving.

We’re an independent Austin contractor, not affiliated with Tamko, which means we can be honest about what’s worth repairing versus replacing. We’re led by Isaac Pruett, who grew up in Los Angeles and learned construction at LA Trade-Tech before years of residential work up and down the West Coast. He’s been serving Austin homeowners for several years now, including plenty of full kitchen gut-outs in Mueller and surrounding neighborhoods.

Which Tamko Models This Applies To

Tamko’s kitchen footprint in Austin varies by era and builder. Most of what we encounter falls into three buckets: laminate countertop systems installed in tract-home builds from the early 2000s through about 2015, cabinet refacing projects using Tamko-branded door and drawer fronts, and backsplash or edge-trim failures where Tamko materials met moisture or heat poorly. The compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss: Tamko laminate counters from different production years used different substrate thicknesses, usually 3/4-inch particleboard but sometimes 5/8-inch in budget spec homes. If you’re patching a section rather than replacing the whole run, the substrate thickness has to match or the seam will telegraph through within a year.

To identify what you have, look on the underside of the counter overhang near the sink cabinet. Tamko often printed a date code and series number there before installation. If it’s gone, measure the substrate thickness at an exposed edge. OEM Tamko replacement surfacing is scarce in Austin now, and our honest recommendation in most cases is a quality aftermarket equivalent: a solid-surface or quartz replacement that matches the existing cabinet footprint and won’t delaminate the way the original laminate did. We also work with KraftMaid and Wellborn cabinetry, plus Cambria, Silestone, and Caesarstone surfaces when a partial repair doesn’t make practical sense.

Signs Your Tamko Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Seam separation at the counter joint. Austin’s summer humidity and winter dry spells expand and contract laminate substrate, and old Tamko seams were often glued rather than mechanically fastened. Once you can feel a ridge with your fingernail, water is getting in and the particleboard is swelling underneath.
  • Delamination near the dishwasher or sink. Moisture intrusion lifts the laminate skin from the substrate, and you’ll see a bubble or a dull, swollen-looking patch. This is the most common Tamko failure we see in Austin kitchens, especially in homes built before 2010.
  • Loose or sagging drawer fronts and cabinet doors. Tamko refacing projects from the mid-2000s used hinge and slide hardware that wasn’t rated for the weight of solid-wood replacement doors. The hardware fails before the door itself, and the symptom is a door that won’t close flush no matter how much you adjust it.
  • Burned or browned trim near the cooktop. Heat damage on Tamko edge banding doesn’t sand out. It’s a material failure, not a cleaning issue, and it means the laminate or its adhesive has degraded to the point where refinishing won’t hold.
  • Soft spots you can feel with a knuckle. Press along the counter overhang every six inches. A spongy section means the particleboard substrate has absorbed moisture and lost its structural integrity. What feels like a small spot is usually the visible edge of a much larger problem underneath.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A walk-in pantry with wood shelving

In Austin, Tamko replacement work breaks down into honest tiers. A partial counter repair or seam rebond runs $800 to $2,500. Replacing the counter surfaces entirely with quartz or solid surface, including removing the old Tamko laminate and hauling it away, lands between $2,000 and $6,500. If the underlying cabinets were compromised by the same moisture that killed the counters, you’re in kitchen-remodel territory: $14,000 to $45,000 depending on layout, cabinet construction, and surface choices. That range accounts for Austin’s labor market, disposal fees, and the fact that older homes in neighborhoods like Allandale and Crestview frequently hide framing or plumbing surprises once the old materials come out.

Every price we give is written before work starts, not a verbal range that grows on the final bill. The written price covers parts, labor, disposal, and any permit fees if structural changes are involved. We don’t do change orders without a signed addendum. The workmanship is covered under our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if anything fails within a year of completion, we fix it at no cost to you.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of things an Austin homeowner can safely check before calling us: confirm the date code under the counter overhang, test for soft spots with finger pressure, and note whether the failure is around a moisture source or a heat source. That information helps us price the job more accurately over the phone. What we don’t recommend is peeling back laminate to inspect the substrate, cutting out a bad section with a circular saw, or attempting to rebond a seam with construction adhesive. Laminate countertop work involves contact adhesives with ventilation requirements, substrate that needs to be dry and flat within tight tolerances, and edge routing that most homeowners don’t have the tooling for. It’s also easy to crack a perfectly good backsplash while prying at a counter section.

Tell me what’s wrong with it. We’ll figure out what it actually needs. Call (903) 623-1966 and we’ll talk through what you’re seeing, give you a ballpark over the phone, and schedule a look if it makes sense.
