Quikrete Driveway & Pavers: The Austin Owner’s Guide
Quikrete driveway and paver installation in Austin typically runs $4,500 to $18,000 depending on square footage, site prep, and whether you’re pouring concrete or laying pavers. We stock the full Quikrete line for both applications, and most driveway assessments are done within a few days of your call. The way most Austin homeowners find us is simple: they walk outside after a heavy rain, notice a crack running the full width of the slab, or they spot a paver that’s sunk two inches below its neighbors, and they want to know if it’s fixable or if the whole run needs to come out.
Quikrete makes both bagged concrete mixes for poured driveways and paver base materials for segmental paver systems. The failure modes are different for each. Concrete cracks, spalls, or heaves. Pavers sink, shift, or let weeds and ants colonize the joints. What they share is a common root cause in Central Texas: our clay soils expand and contract with moisture, and anything sitting on top of them without proper base prep will move within a few seasons.
Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

If you bought your driveway materials from a big-box store in Austin, you’re almost certainly working with one of three Quikrete product families. The first is Quikrete 5000, the 5,000 PSI concrete mix we recommend for driveways that carry a full-size truck or SUV. The second is Quikrete Crack-Resistant Concrete Mix, which has polymer fibers mixed in to slow the spread of hairline cracks. The third is the Quikrete Paver Base and All-Purpose Sand line, which goes under segmental pavers and is the layer most likely to fail when a paver driveway starts sinking.
Here’s a compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss: Quikrete 5000 is not the same as Quikrete Crack-Resistant Mix, and the bags look nearly identical from a distance. The bag color is the tell. The 5000 bags are yellow. Crack-Resistant bags are red and gray. If you’re patching an existing pour, you want to match the original PSI rating, not just grab whatever bag is on the shelf, because a patch that cures harder than the surrounding slab will actually accelerate cracking at the joint line. Let us know what the original bag looked like, or send a photo, and we’ll match it.
One thing worth knowing about Quikrete products specifically: the company makes both pro-grade and homeowner-grade mixes, and the big-box stores in Austin mostly stock the homeowner versions. We buy the same pro-grade Quikrete products through our suppliers, which have better aggregate consistency and fewer voids in the finished pour. That’s the difference most people notice in the final finish.

Signs Your Quikrete Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Cracks wider than a quarter inch, especially near the edges. Concrete in Austin expands and contracts with our hot-cold swings, and a crack that starts hairline can widen to structural within two years. Edge cracks usually mean the sub-base wasn’t compacted far enough out past the forms.
- A paver that sinks below its neighbors after rain. This is almost always base failure, not paver failure. The Quikrete paver base underneath has washed out or never had enough compaction, and the paver is settling into the void. You can reset one paver, but if three or more are sinking, the base layer needs to come out and be redone.
- White, chalky residue on the surface. This is efflorescence, and it happens when water moves through the concrete and brings soluble salts to the surface. It’s largely cosmetic, but persistent efflorescence tells us water is moving through the slab, which means there’s a drainage problem that will eventually undermine it.
- Joint sand washing out between pavers. After a hard Austin downpour, check the joints. If the sand is gone and pavers are starting to rock underfoot, water is getting under the system. Left alone, you’ll get more movement, more weeds, and more sinking.
- A low spot that holds water for more than 24 hours after rain. Puddled water sitting on concrete or pavers is a sign the slab or base has settled unevenly. Standing water also accelerates surface breakdown, so the low spot gets worse every season until it’s addressed.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a typical Austin two-car driveway, here’s what you’re looking at:
| Work Scope | Austin Price Range |
|---|---|
| Full Quikrete concrete driveway pour (standard 2-car, approx 400-600 sq ft) | $4,500 – $12,000 |
| Driveway replacement (demo, haul-off, new pour) | $5,000 – $14,000 |
| Paver driveway installation (Belgard/Unilock/Techo-Bloc pavers over Quikrete base) | $7,000 – $18,000 |
| Paver patio or walkway extension | $3,500 – $11,000 |
| Driveway crack repair and surface sealing | $250 – $700 |
The range comes down to three things: square footage, access for equipment, and what’s hiding under the existing surface. A driveway with a clean, compacted base that just needs a new pour is on the low end. A driveway with tree roots, old asphalt underneath, or a slope that needs regrading is on the high end. Every quote includes demolition and haul-off, base prep, the Quikrete product itself, labor, and our written guarantee. We hand you one line-item price before any work starts, and that price does not move unless you change the scope. It’s a written number, not a verbal one.
Our work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if anything we install fails within a year of completion, we fix it at no charge. No dispute process, no fine print. That’s the deal on every driveway we pour in Austin.
DIY or Call Us?
Some parts of driveway work are reasonable for a handy homeowner. You can clean and seal an existing slab with Quikrete’s sealer products. You can re-sand the joints between pavers. You can pull a single sunken paver, add fresh base, and reset it. Those are Saturday-morning jobs that don’t require specialized equipment.
What we’d caution you against is pouring a full driveway yourself. Concrete work is unforgiving: once the pour starts, you have a working window of about 45 minutes to an hour in Austin heat before the mix starts setting, and if you miss the finish, you’re not fixing it, you’re replacing it. The same goes for paver base work on any area larger than a small landing, because hand-compacting base for a two-car driveway is not realistic. Wet concrete is also caustic enough to burn exposed skin, and a full pour means moving thousands of pounds of material. If you want to check numbers before deciding, call us at (903) 623-1966 and ask for an estimate. Isaac Pruett will tell you straight: what it costs, whether it’s a base problem or a surface problem, and what he’d do if it were his own driveway.

FAQs

A properly poured Quikrete driveway with a compacted base will last 25 to 30 years in Austin before needing major repair, while a paver driveway with a good Quikrete base will give you 20 to 25 years on the pavers themselves with periodic joint re-sanding. The lifespan killer in this area is the clay soil, not the concrete: without adequate base compaction and drainage, a slab can start failing in five to seven years. Call (903) 623-1966 for a free estimate and we’ll tell you how your situation stacks up.
Hairline cracks under a quarter inch can be sealed and are largely cosmetic, but cracks wider than that, or cracks that run edge to edge, usually indicate base movement that will continue. We’ll always quote you the repair price and the replacement price and tell you which one makes sense for the remaining life of the driveway.
A standard two-car Quikrete driveway replacement in Austin takes three to five working days from demolition to the pour to the point where you can park on it, with the concrete needing about seven days to fully cure before heavy vehicle traffic. Weather and permit timing can add a few days. We’ll give you a written schedule with the estimate.
We supply the Quikrete materials as part of the estimate, which means we buy the pro-grade versions through our suppliers, not the homeowner-grade bags off the store shelf. You don’t need to purchase anything in advance. The material cost is already in your line-item price.
