Plant Prefab Driveway & Pavers: The Austin Owner’s Guide
If you own a Plant Prefab home in Austin and your driveway or paver section has failed, we stock compatible replacement pavers and can typically install them within one to two weeks of your estimate. Full paver driveway replacement in Austin runs $7,000 to $18,000, while a smaller repair section usually lands between $1,200 and $4,500 depending on square footage and base condition. Most owners discover the problem after a heavy rain, when a paver sinks or shifts and water starts pooling against the foundation.
We’re an independent Austin contractor, not affiliated with Plant Prefab, but we’ve worked on enough of their homes across Mueller, East Austin, and Allandale to know exactly how their site work behaves in central Texas soil. Tell me what’s wrong with it. We’ll figure out what it actually needs.
Which Plant Prefab Models This Applies To

Plant Prefab’s Austin projects generally fall into two groups: the LivingHome series (built on standard site-poured slabs with paver or concrete driveways) and their accessory dwelling units, which often use a compact paver apron rather than a full driveway. The good news is that the pavers themselves are almost always a standard modular concrete unit, typically 6×9 or 6×6 inches, in a tumbled finish that Plant Prefab’s landscape contractors source regionally.
To identify your exact paver, pull one up from an edge near the garage apron and check the underside. Most Austin-area Plant Prefab installs use Belgard, Unilock, or a local equivalent with a 60mm thickness for driveways or 40mm for walkways and patios. If your pavers are 60mm and you replace them with 40mm walkway units, they’ll crack under vehicle weight within two years. That’s the single most common compatibility mistake we see after a DIY or handyman patch job.
OEM versus aftermarket really comes down to color and texture matching. The paver itself is a commodity, but a weathered driveway has UV fading, so a brand-new paver of the same model will look brighter than the surrounding field. We’ll often pull from our stock of aged, blended pavers or color-match and seal the repaired section so it doesn’t read as an obvious patch.

Signs Your Plant Prefab Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Sinking or low spots near the garage apron. Austin’s clay soil expands and contracts hard with moisture, and if the paver base wasn’t compacted with a plate compactor in 4-inch lifts, the ground settles differently under the driveway edges. You’ll see a visible dip where cars roll in.
- Pavers rocking underfoot or under tire. This means the bedding sand has washed out through the joints, usually from a poor edge restraint. Once one paver moves, the surrounding units start to shift like loose teeth.
- Weeds or ants pushing through the joints. If you’re pulling weeds from the same joints every spring, the polymeric sand has failed. That’s not a paver problem yet, but it will be. Left unaddressed, the joints widen and pavers drift.
- Standing water or erosion channels after rain. Central Texas downpours move fast. A properly graded driveway slopes away from the home at about 1% to 2%. If water sheets toward the foundation or carves channels through the base, the grade was wrong from day one on some Plant Prefab sites.
- Crumbling paver edges or surface flaking. This is freeze-thaw damage, even in Austin, because pavers absorb water and our winter nights do dip below freezing. De-icing salts made for concrete slabs accelerate the spalling. We recommend paver-safe ice melt only.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we quote in Austin, and the numbers are written down before we start. A full paver driveway replacement runs $7,000 to $18,000. Concrete driveways run $4,500 to $12,000. A partial repair, meaning we pull a failed section, re-compact the base, reset the pavers, and re-sand the joints, typically costs $1,200 to $4,500 depending on whether the base needs to be excavated and rebuilt or just top-dressed.
What drives the price: square footage, whether the existing base is salvageable, edge restraint quality, and paver thickness. A 60mm driveway paver costs more than a 40mm patio unit, but it’s the right material for vehicle loads. Every quote includes removal of failed pavers, base repair, new bedding sand, paver installation, joint sand, and clean-up. We also write the warranty terms: 365 days from completion date, and if something fails, we return at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: walk the driveway after a rain and mark low spots with chalk, note which pavers rock, and check whether the edge restraint along the driveway border is still buried or has popped up. Those observations help us quote faster.
What I’d steer you away from is lifting pavers to “fix” a low spot without a plate compactor and fresh base material. The paver you reset will be back down within six months, and if you break an edge on a tumbled unit during removal, you’ll need a matching replacement anyway. Also, a word to the wise: paver driveways weigh a lot, and moving 2,000 pounds of stone on a weekend is how backs get thrown out. If your section is more than about 40 square feet, call us at (903) 623-1966. We’ll bring the truck.
FAQs

Properly installed 60mm concrete pavers with a compacted base should last 25 to 30 years in Austin’s climate, though the joint sand needs refreshing every 3 to 5 years. Poor base prep or wrong paver thickness will cut that to under 10. Call (903) 623-1966 and we’ll tell you honestly which camp your driveway falls into.
Yes, in most Austin cases we lift the affected pavers, excavate and re-compact the base, then reset the same pavers if they’re intact. The repaired section won’t be invisible, but a good color match and joint sand blend make it close. If the base failure is widespread, a partial repair becomes a losing game, and we’ll tell you that before quoting.
A typical repair section of 200 to 400 square feet takes one to two days on site in Austin, including base compaction and cure time before we let vehicles back on it. Full driveway replacement is usually four to seven working days, depending on weather and access. We pin the schedule in your written quote.
We stock common 6×9 and 6×6 tumbled concrete pavers in 60mm and 40mm thicknesses, along with bedding sand, polymeric sand, and edge restraint, on our trucks and at our Austin yard. We also carry KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone parts for interior Plant Prefab fit-outs. If we don’t have your exact color on hand, we source it within a few days.
