James Hardie Kitchen Remodeling: The Austin Owner’s Guide

If your kitchen has James Hardie siding, trim, or HardieBacker board that’s failed, warped, or delaminated, the typical full kitchen remodel in Austin runs $14,000 to $45,000, with smaller Hardie-focused repairs often landing between $4,000 and $9,000. We stock James Hardie-compatible replacement materials on our trucks and can match existing panels on most Austin homes within a day or two of inspection. What usually brings homeowners to this page is water staining along the base of exterior kitchen walls, cracked HardieBacker behind a failed backsplash, or trim that’s swollen and pulling away from the wall. The failure is rarely the James Hardie product itself, by the way. It’s almost always an installation shortcut or a flashing detail that was skipped years ago, and the Hardie material is just the part that took the hit.

Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

We work with the full James Hardie line as it appears in Austin kitchens and adjacent exterior walls: HardiePlank lap siding (the most common exterior product), HardiePanel vertical siding, HardieTrim boards in 7.25-inch and 3.5-inch widths, and HardieBacker cement board in 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch thicknesses for tile and backsplash substrates. The compatibility gotcha most owners run into is this: HardiePlank installed before 2015 may be the older 5/16-inch thickness, while current stock is 7/16-inch, and the two don’t sit flush on a repair line. We measure before we order, every time. For HardieBacker, the 1/2-inch board is for floors and counters; the 1/4-inch is for walls and backsplashes only. Using the thinner board under a tile floor is a classic DIY error that leads to cracked grout and loose tile within two years here in Austin, where humidity swings and slab movement are constant. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with James Hardie, but we’ve installed and replaced their products on Austin homes for years, and we’ll always tell you when a genuine James Hardie piece is worth the extra cost versus a quality aftermarket equivalent.

Signs Your James Hardie Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Swollen or swollen-looking HardieTrim at the base of exterior kitchen walls. This usually means the original installer buried the trim below grade or didn’t leave the required 6-inch clearance to soil, and water’s been wicking up for years. The fix is pulling the lower course, correcting the clearance, and replacing the damaged trim boards.
  • Cracked or crumbling HardieBacker behind a kitchen backsplash. We see this when the board was installed with drywall screws instead of approved backer screws, or when the seams weren’t taped and mudded. The tile starts to flex, then the grout fails, then moisture gets behind the board.
  • Paint peeling in horizontal lines along HardiePlank siding. That pattern is the lap lines telegraphing through, and it almost always means the siding wasn’t primed on all six sides before installation. Touch-up paint won’t fix it; the affected boards need to come off, get properly sealed, or be replaced.
  • Dark staining or soft spots at kitchen corner trim. Austin’s heavy spring rains find every gap. Corner trim that wasn’t flashed with a moisture barrier behind it will stain first, then rot the framing behind it. You’ll smell it inside before you see it sometimes.
  • Tiles cracking in a diagonal line across the kitchen floor. That’s the HardieBacker seam telegraphing through because the underlayment joints weren’t offset from the subfloor joints. We have to pull the tile and board in that section and re-set it correctly.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Austin kitchens, here’s what you should expect in real dollars. A full James Hardie-related kitchen remodel, meaning exterior siding and trim replacement plus interior renovation, runs $14,000 to $45,000 depending on kitchen size, material grade, and condition of the framing we find behind the moisture damage. A smaller job, like replacing a section of failed HardieBacker and re-tiling a backsplash, lands between $800 and $2,500. Replacing exterior HardieTrim boards and correcting grade clearance on one kitchen wall typically runs $1,200 to $4,500. Every quote includes the material, labor, disposal, and a written line-item price before work starts. You’ll know what the HardieBacker costs, what the tile labor costs, and what the trim stock costs. We don’t hand you a lump number and figure it out later. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right within a year of completion, we make it right at no cost to you.

DIY or Call Us?

The honest split is this: you can safely identify the problem. Walk around your kitchen’s exterior walls and look for swelling, staining, or trim that’s pulling away. Inside, tap on tiles with a broom handle; a hollow sound means the HardieBacker or adhesive bond has failed. What we don’t recommend is cutting into cement board yourself. HardieBacker releases silica dust when cut, and without a proper respirator and shears, you’re breathing that into your lungs. Same goes for pulling exterior HardiePlank: the boards are heavy, they’re nailed into framing you can’t see, and one wrong cut at the roofline and you’ve turned a $2,000 repair into a $12,000 water intrusion problem. If you’ve got a section of failed siding or a cracked backsplash, call us at (903) 623-1966. We’ll come look, tell you what’s actually needed, and give you a written price before any work starts.
