GAF Roofing: The Austin Owner’s Guide
We install and repair GAF roofing systems across Austin, with most repair work running $400 – $1,800 depending on what failed and how far the damage spread. A full GAF roof replacement in Austin typically lands between $8,000 and $20,000. Most homeowners discover a problem the hard way: a water stain on the ceiling after a Hill Country thunderstorm, a shingle in the yard after a wind gust off Lake Travis, or granules piling up in the gutters like black sand. If you’re seeing any of that, you’re in the right place.
We’re an independent Austin contractor, not a GAF corporate entity. That matters because we match the right GAF part to your existing roof rather than pushing a full tear-off when a repair will hold. Call (903) 623-1966 and we’ll walk you through what you’re seeing.
Which GAF Models This Applies To

GAF’s Timberline line dominates Austin roofs, and within that line the Timberline HDZ and Ultra HDZ shingles are the ones we work on most. We also handle the lower-profile Timberline Natural Shadow and the architectural heavyweight Timberline Ultra HD, especially in Mueller and Crestview where original builds from the 2000s are hitting end-of-life. The quickest way to identify your exact shingle is the bundle wrapper, but most homeowners don’t keep those. Instead, look for the GAF logo embossed on the shingle’s nailing strip, or measure the exposure: HDZ shingles run 5-5/8 inches of exposure, Natural Shadow runs 5 inches, and Ultra HD runs 5-1/4 inches.
The OEM-vs-aftermarket decision matters here. GAF’s StainGuard Plus algae protection and their LayerLock nailing strip are engineered into the shingle itself, so a generic “compatible” shingle from a supply house won’t have the same wind rating or algae warranty. For flashing, pipe boots, and ridge cap, quality aftermarket parts perform fine. But for field shingles and underlayment, we recommend matching GAF to GAF. It keeps the system warranty intact and keeps the roof color-matched.

Signs Your GAF Roofing Is Failing
- Granules collecting in gutters or downspout elbows. Austin’s UV is punishing, and once the asphalt layer oxidizes and starts shedding granules, the shingle is past its mid-life. The granule loss accelerates from there.
- Curling shingle corners or raised tabs. This is usually a ventilation problem in the attic. Heat builds up under the deck, bakes the shingle from below, and the corners lift. You’ll see it most on west-facing roof planes in Rosedale and Tarrytown.
- Dark streaks or staining that won’t wash off. Glen Rose limestone dust and Austin’s humidity feed algae growth, especially on north-facing slopes under oak canopy. It’s ugly and it shortens shingle life by holding moisture.
- A shingle or piece of ridge cap in the yard after a storm. That means the nail zone or adhesive strip let go. Sometimes it’s an installation error from the original build, sometimes it’s wind fatigue. Either way, one loose shingle invites the next one.
- Water staining on ceilings or soffit boards. By the time you see this, water has already passed the shingle, the underlayment, and the deck. It’s not a shingle problem anymore, it’s a system problem. The fix is usually more than a single shingle swap.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Roof repair in Austin runs $400 – $1,800 for most single-issue jobs. A full GAF replacement runs $8,000 – $20,000 depending on roof size, pitch, tear-off layers, and whether you go with HDZ or upgrade to Ultra HD. Where your job falls depends on three things: how many squares of shingles we’re replacing, whether the decking underneath survived, and how steep the roof is. A two-story Craftsman in Hyde Park with a 12/12 pitch costs more to work on than a single-story ranch in North Loop, and that’s just physics.
Every estimate is a written line-item price, delivered before work starts. You’ll see the shingle count, the underlayment, the drip edge, the flashing, and the labor separated out. No change orders unless something hidden shows up, and if it does, we show you before we spend your money. The workmanship is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something isn’t right within a year of completion, we fix it at no cost to you.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things from the ground: look for missing shingles, check gutters and downspouts for granule buildup, and scan for shingles that look lifted or out of line. That’s worth doing before you call, because it helps us understand what you’re seeing. What you should not do is climb on the roof. GAF shingles are fine to walk on when installed correctly, but an Austin roof in July is 140 degrees at the surface, steep pitches sneak up on you, and a slip on loose granules puts you in the ER. That’s not fear talk, it’s just the truth from someone who’s been on a thousand roofs.
If you find something suspicious, call (903) 623-1966. Tell me what’s wrong with it. We’ll figure out what it actually needs.
FAQs

Most GAF Timberline shingles last 18 – 25 years in Austin’s climate. The UV here is harder on asphalt shingles than the manufacturer’s ideal conditions, so our sun and hail typically knock a few years off the national average, especially on unshaded south- and west-facing planes. Call (903) 623-1966 if you’re at year 18 and seeing granule loss.
Yes, if the decking is intact and the failing area is localized, we repair it. Single shingle swaps, pipe boot replacement, and ridge cap re-sealing are common repairs that cost a few hundred dollars. If the shingles are older than 20 years or the underlayment has failed, replacement becomes the honest recommendation. Call (903) 623-1966 for an honest assessment.
Most repairs take half a day once we’re on site, including setup, the repair itself, and full cleanup. Full replacements take 2 – 4 days depending on roof size and weather. We’ll give you a written schedule with your estimate.
We keep common GAF Timberline HDZ colors, pipe boots, ridge cap, and underlayment on our trucks and in our Austin shop. For less common colors or discontinued lines, we source from GAF suppliers in the Austin area, usually within a day or two. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone on remodeling projects, so when a roof leak leads to a ceiling repair, we handle that too. Call (903) 623-1966 and we’ll confirm whether we have your shingle in stock.
