CertainTeed Windows & Doors: The Austin Owner’s Guide

If you’re holding a broken CertainTeed window sash, a lock that’s stripped out, or a door panel that won’t stay square, here’s the short version: we stock a wide range of CertainTeed-compatible window and door parts on our trucks, and most replacements run between $250 and $1,800 installed in Austin, depending on whether we’re swapping hardware, replacing glass, or installing a full sash or panel. We can usually match your part within a day or two once we see a photo of the label or the failed component.

Call (903) 623-1966

Most Austin homeowners discover the problem the same way: a window that suddenly won’t stay open, a door that drags against the frame after a heavy rain, or a lock that spins without catching. CertainTeed products are well built, but years of Texas sun, humidity swings, and the occasional hailstorm take a toll on seals, balances, and hardware long before the frame itself gives out.

Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed has produced several window and door lines over the years, and the parts are not always interchangeable between them. The main lines we see across Austin homes are the Bryn Mawr II, New Castle, and Castlewood single-hung and double-hung windows, plus the Flintwood and Restorations Series for replacement projects. Vinyl windows from the CertainTeed Simonton era add another layer of complexity, because parts for those carry Simonton part numbers even when the window says CertainTeed on the glass.

The fastest way to identify what you need is to look for the AAMA certification sticker on the window or door frame. It usually carries a series code and manufacturing date. If the sticker is gone (Austin sun bleaches them out fast), a photo of the corner of the sash and the lock mechanism is usually enough for us to identify the series. One compatibility gotcha we run into regularly: balance springs from a Bryn Mawr II will not fit a New Castle, even if both windows are 36 inches wide. The shoe profile is different. Do not buy a generic balance online without checking this first.

For most hardware (locks, tilt latches, pivot bars, weatherstripping), OEM CertainTeed parts are the right call because the tolerances are tight. For balances and glass, a quality aftermarket equivalent can save 30 to 50 percent and often carries a longer warranty than the original. We’ll tell you which is which before we order anything.

Signs Your CertainTeed Windows & Doors Is Failing

  • Window won’t stay open or falls shut. This is a failed balance spring or shoe, and it’s the most common CertainTeed failure we see in Austin. The spring inside the vinyl jamb liner loses tension over time, especially in bedrooms that face direct afternoon sun.
  • Condensation or fog between the glass panes. That means the insulated glass unit’s seal has failed. In Austin’s humidity, a failed seal shows up within 10 to 15 years on average, and the fix is a new IGU, not a whole new window.
  • Lock spins without engaging or takes force to latch. The cam or keeper has worn down or misaligned. On CertainTeed single-hungs, the lock is usually replaceable as a small assembly without touching the sash.
  • Door drags at the top corner or won’t clear the threshold. This is usually hinge sag or a frame that’s shifted with Austin’s clay soil movement. Sometimes it’s just a worn hinge pin; sometimes the slab needs to be rehung.
  • Drafts you can feel at the sill or side jamb. The pile weatherstrip or the corner seals have flattened out. CertainTeed uses a specific profile, and generic store weatherstrip doesn’t always seat correctly.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A built-in window seat in a bay window

Here’s what CertainTeed parts replacement typically costs installed in Austin, based on the work we’ve done across neighborhoods like Mueller, Allandale, and Crestview over the past several years. The exact number depends on your series, the part, and whether we’re doing one window or five.

Service Typical Installed Cost (Austin)
Lock or tilt latch replacement $85 – $250
Balance spring replacement (per window) $180 – $400
Weatherstripping replacement (per window or door) $120 – $350
Insulated glass unit replacement $350 – $900
Full sash replacement $500 – $1,800
Door hinge and rehang $300 – $700

Every one of those numbers includes the part, labor, and cleanup. You get a written price before we start, and if the part fails within 365 days of the completion date, we return and fix it at no charge under the Done Right Promise. No change orders, no surprise invoices.

DIY or Call Us?

Some CertainTeed maintenance is genuinely safe to do yourself. Cleaning tracks, tightening visible screws on a lock keeper, and swapping a pull handle are all reasonable DIY jobs. The danger zone is anything with tension: balance springs, pivot bars, and sash cords under load. A balance spring that releases while you’re working in the jamb can take off a fingertip. We’ve also seen homeowners crack IGU glass trying to force a swollen sash, and a broken IGU replacement in Austin costs more than the service call would have.

If you’re not sure, send us a photo. Tell me what’s wrong with it. We’ll figure out what it actually needs. If it’s a five-minute fix we’ll tell you how to do it over the phone. If it needs a spring or glass, call (903) 623-1966 and we’ll bring the right part.
