Caesarstone Home Additions & ADU: The Austin Owner’s Guide

Caesarstone surfaces hold up well during home additions and ADU construction in Austin, but only when they’re handled correctly from day one. If you’re adding square footage or building an accessory dwelling unit, you’ll need Caesarstone quartz cut, seamed, and installed to match your existing counters, and that work typically runs $45,000 to $130,000 for the full addition in the Austin market. Most homeowners discover their Caesarstone needs attention when seams open up, edges chip during framing, or the slab cracks after the foundation settles on our expansive clay soil.

We’re Mason Remodeling Co Austin, and we’ve been doing additions and ADUs with Caesarstone since before ADUs were even called ADUs. What we’ve learned is that quartz doesn’t fail on its own usually. It fails when someone cuts a corner on support, seams, or slab handling during the build. That’s what we fix, and that’s what we prevent.

Which Caesarstone Models This Applies To

Caesarstone runs two main product lines that matter for Austin additions and ADUs: the Classic line (older models like 2141 London Grey, 5131 Calacatta Nuvo, and 5100 Blizzard) and the newer Supernatural and Whitelight collections, which use different pigment densities and edge profiles. The gotcha for Austin homeowners is this: older Classic slabs are 20mm thick, while most new-build Caesarstone is 30mm. If your existing kitchen has 20mm Caesarstone and you’re adding a wet bar or ADU kitchenette, matching the exact thickness matters more than matching the color name. A 30mm slab next to a 20mm slab looks wrong at the edge, and no amount of seaming hides that.

To identify your exact slab, check the underside of an overhang for the printed Caesarstone label, or measure the edge thickness with a tape. The label will show the model number and sometimes the lot code. As an independent service provider, we’re not affiliated with Caesarstone directly, but we work with their full current and discontinued color range through our supplier network. When an exact discontinued color can’t be sourced, we’ll show you the three closest current options with physical samples before we order anything.

Signs Your Caesarstone Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

  • Seam separation at the addition junction: Where new Caesarstone meets existing Caesarstone, the seam can open up if the addition settles at a different rate than the original structure. Austin’s clay soil expands and contracts seasonally, and a 1/16-inch seam gap in August can become a 1/8-inch gap by January. This is usually fixable without replacing the slab.
  • Chipped edges near high-traffic corners: If your new ADU kitchen or bar area has a peninsula or island corner that catches hip bags and laundry baskets, expect chips. Caesarstone is hard but brittle at sharp edges, and a chipped corner needs either an eased edge recut or a new slab if the chip is deep.
  • Dull spots or etching around the sink or prep area: Caesarstone is non-porous and doesn’t etch like marble, but harsh cleaners (bleach, oven cleaner overspray) can strip the resin polish. If a section looks permanently hazy under light, the polish has failed and needs mechanical re-polishing.
  • A hollow-sounding section over the new cabinet run: If tapping the top near the addition’s new cabinetry sounds hollow or different from the rest of the surface, the slab support may have been installed without adequate shims or leveling. Over time, this creates a stress point that can crack the quartz.
  • Visible crack running from a cooktop cutout or sink cutout: Quartz cracks at inside corners when the cutout radius is too tight or when someone drills the faucet holes too close to the edge. Once a crack starts at a cutout, it spreads. Full slab replacement in that section is the only real repair.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Austin additions and ADUs specifically, the Caesarstone work happens in two phases: new slab installation for the added square footage (countertops, islands, vanity tops) and seam-matching or repair where new meets old. Here’s how pricing breaks down when we’re already on-site for the addition or ADU build:

  • New Caesarstone countertop installation for an ADU kitchenette or addition wet bar: $2,000 – $6,500 depending on slab size and edge profile.
  • Seam repair or re-seaming where existing Caesarstone meets new work: $400 – $1,200 depending on seam length and whether we need to re-level the substrate.
  • Island slab replacement due to settling cracks or cutout damage: $3,000 – $10,000 including demolition, new slab, and installation.
  • Full addition with Caesarstone throughout (kitchen extension, bath vanity, bar top): $45,000 – $130,000. This is the full-project range, with the quartz work typically representing 8 – 15% of the total budget.

Every quote is written, not verbal. You’ll see the slab cost, fabrication, delivery, install labor, and disposal broken out line by line before we start. No change orders. No “we’ll figure out the final number later.” And the workmanship is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if anything fails within a year of completion, we come back and make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

Caesarstone is quartz composite: roughly 90% crushed quartz held in resin. It’s heavy. A single 30mm slab can weigh over 400 pounds. What an owner can safely do is check the obvious: run a finger along seams to feel for gaps, check edges for chips, and look under the slab for missing shims or loose cabinet jacks. What an owner should not do is attempt to re-seam, lift, or remove a slab. Quartz that drops does not bounce. It shatters, and the fragments are razor sharp. We’ve also seen DIY caulk jobs trap moisture at the seam line, which causes the substrate to swell and eventually pops the slab. That $12 tube of silicone turns into a $2,000 slab replacement.
