Boxabl Kitchen Remodeling: The Austin Owner’s Guide

A full Boxabl kitchen remodel in Austin typically runs $14,000 to $45,000 installed, depending on cabinet grade, countertop material, and whether you’re moving plumbing or electrical. We stock Boxabl-compatible cabinetry, countertops, and fixtures on our trucks and can usually start within a week of your written estimate. Most owners reach out after living with the factory kitchen for a year or two and realizing the laminate counters have started peeling at the seams, the soft-close hinges are sagging, or they simply want more than the stock layout gives them.

At Mason Remodeling Co Austin, we’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with Boxabl. That matters because we’re not limited to whatever the factory shipped. We can match, upgrade, or rework your Boxabl kitchen with parts that actually fit the compact dimensions and lightweight wall systems these homes use. Here’s what you need to know before you spend a dollar.

Which Boxabl Models This Applies To

Boxabl homes share a common kitchen core across the Casita line, but there are real differences between early production units and newer builds. The original Casita shipped with a compact galley kitchen built around a 60-inch run of base cabinets, a 24-inch sink base, and a two-burner electric cooktop. Newer Casita 2.0 units moved to a slightly wider 72-inch layout with space for a slim dishwasher and a taller upper cabinet run. The wall system is structural insulated panel (SIP) construction in both, which changes how cabinets get mounted.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most Austin owners don’t discover until demo day: standard big-box cabinets are built for 2×4 framed walls with 16-inch stud spacing. Boxabl panels don’t have conventional studs, so mounting requires expansion anchors rated for SIP core material, and base cabinets need a cleat system so the load transfers properly. We’ve done enough of these in Mueller, East Austin, and around Travis County to know exactly what hardware works and what will pull loose. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Boxabl’s factory cabinets are fine for a weekend cabin, but they’re not built for daily family use. KraftMaid and Wellborn both make lines we’ve adapted to Boxabl dimensions, and the hinge and drawer-slide quality is a noticeable step up. If you’re keeping the shell and replacing the guts, that’s where most of your budget should go.

Signs Your Boxabl Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Laminate peeling at counter seams. Boxabl’s stock counters use a heat-bonded laminate that breaks down fast in Austin’s humidity swings. Once moisture gets under the edge, the seam lifts and never reseals cleanly.
  • Cabinet doors that won’t stay aligned. The factory hinges are single-adjust and lightweight. After a few hundred open-close cycles, they drift and the doors start rubbing at the corners. This isn’t a hinge tightening issue, it’s the hinge itself wearing out.
  • Drawer slides that bind or stick. The stock slides are side-mount with nylon rollers. They collect dust, warp slightly in heat, and start grinding. If you’re yanking a drawer open, the slide has already failed.
  • Sink base showing water staining or swelling. The original sink plumbing uses compression fittings that can back off during transport. Even a slow drip inside the cabinet destroys the particleboard base over six months.
  • Cooktop cutout cracking at the corners. The factory counter cutout has minimal clearance. When the SIP wall flexes during storms or temperature swings, the rigid corner cracks propagate out from the cooktop opening.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled kitchen with painted cabinets and a farmhouse sink

A Boxabl kitchen remodel in Austin lands between $14,000 and $45,000, and the spread is real. A compact refresh (new countertops, refaced or replaced cabinets, new sink and faucet, subway tile backsplash) sits in the $14,000 to $20,000 range. A full gut with appliance upgrades, soft-close everything, quartz or solid surface counters, an island if the floor plan allows, and relocated plumbing or electrical runs pushes toward $35,000 to $45,000.

Every Mason Remodeling Co Austin project gets a written price before we start. Not a ballpark, not a verbal number. A line-item written estimate so you see exact dollars for cabinets, countertops, labor, plumbing, electrical, and permit costs. We quote the work, and we hold to it. No change-order surprises at the end. Our workmanship warranty runs 365 days from completion, and if something isn’t right during that window, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s standard on every Boxabl kitchen we do.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely handle a few things yourself: tightening hinge screws, adjusting a drawer front, checking under the sink for slow drips. Those are homeowner-level tasks. But swapping cabinets or countertops on a Boxabl is not a cabinet-level job. The SIP wall mounting, the tight tolerances around the cooktop, the need to level cabinets on a floor assembly that flexes, and the wiring and plumbing behind the shell all need someone who’s done this specific job before. One wrong anchor placement, and you’ve compromised the panel. One misrouted water line, and you’re dealing with mold inside a SIP wall, which is a much bigger problem in Austin’s climate than it would be somewhere dry.

“Tell me what’s wrong with it. We’ll figure out what it actually needs.” That’s how I approach every Boxabl kitchen we look at. If you’re not sure whether you’re looking at a hinge problem or a cabinet problem, call (903) 623-1966 and we’ll talk it through. No charge for the conversation.
