ActiveYards Home Additions & ADU: The Austin Owner’s Guide
If you’re planning a home addition or ADU that needs to coordinate with an existing ActiveYards structure, fence line, or outdoor living layout, we install and build around ActiveYards-compatible projects throughout Austin. A home addition in Austin typically runs $45,000 – $130,000 installed, while a detached ADU lands between $90,000 and $220,000 depending on size, foundation, and finishes. Most owners reach this point after realizing their ActiveYards fence, pergola, or hardscape layout doesn’t match the footprint of the addition they’re planning, and they need a contractor who understands how to tie the new build into the existing system without damaging it or voiding its warranty.
Which ActiveYards Models This Applies To

ActiveYards makes modular aluminum and vinyl fencing, gates, railings, and some pergola/arbor structures. The compatibility question usually isn’t about the addition itself, it’s about how the new foundation, roofline, or exterior wall meets an existing ActiveYards run. You’ll need to match post spacing, gate swing clearance, and rail-to-wall attachment points before framing starts. If your ActiveYards system uses the Legacy or Prestige series (heavier gauge posts and brackets), you’ll have different anchoring requirements than the more residential Expressions line. The gotcha we see in Austin: many additions push the exterior wall past the original fence line, which means an existing ActiveYards section has to be partially demoed and re-laid. That’s not a reason to skip the project, but it does need to be in the budget and the plan from day one.
OEM ActiveYards posts, brackets, and panel kits are the cleanest path when you’re extending a run. Aftermarket aluminum posts can work for standalone sections, but the bracket channel dimensions differ between manufacturers, so mixing systems often leaves visible seams or wobble at the joint. We’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with ActiveYards, but we work with their spec sheets and can order OEM or spec-matched parts directly.

Signs Your ActiveYards Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
- Gate posts leaning after the addition is framed. The new concrete pour shifted drainage or added load against the post base. The fix is usually re-setting the post in a deeper footing with proper drainage stone packed around it.
- Panels no longer line up at corners or wall intersections. The addition’s exterior wall sits a few inches outside the original layout, so the ActiveYards run has to be re-measured and a short section rebuilt to close the gap.
- Water pooling at the bottom rail after a heavy Austin rain. New rooflines or downspouts are dumping water against the fence base. Re-grading or adding a French drain at the transition point usually solves it.
- Railing or gate feels loose where it meets the new structure. Surface-mount brackets pull away from fiber cement or stucco when they’re not anchored into studs or blocking. This shows up within the first season of expansion and contraction.
- HOA or City of Austin flagging setback compliance. ADUs and additions have specific rear and side setback requirements in Austin. If your ActiveYards fence is now too close to the new structure, it may need to move. We handle that on the framing side so the fence work and the addition work happen in the right order.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For the ActiveYards portion specifically, re-setting a gate post with a new concrete footing runs $300 – $700 depending on access. Rebuilding a short panel run (10 – 20 linear feet) with OEM-style ActiveYards panels, posts, and brackets lands between $800 and $2,500 installed. The bigger number is the addition itself: $45,000 – $130,000 for an attached home addition in Austin, and $90,000 – $220,000 for a full ADU with its own kitchen and bath. What drives the range is foundation type (slab versus pier-and-beam), square footage, exterior finish, and how much of the existing ActiveYards layout has to be modified. We write the price before work starts, in full, and that number doesn’t change unless you change the scope. Every job carries a written guarantee, and if something isn’t right within 365 days of completion, we come back and make it right at no cost to you.
DIY or Call Us?
Post re-setting and panel alignment look simple, but ActiveYards aluminum posts are set in concrete and the gate hardware is under constant tension from the swing weight. Digging out a post footing next to a freshly poured addition foundation is a good way to undermine the new concrete if you don’t know where the load path runs. What an Austin homeowner can safely do is check for loose bracket screws, note where water is pooling after a storm, and measure the gap between the existing fence line and the new exterior wall. If it’s more than a half-inch off, the post bases have probably shifted. For anything involving concrete, drainage, or gate tension, call us. We’ll tell you what’s actually wrong, and what it actually needs. Call (903) 623-1966 and we’ll walk you through it, no charge for the conversation.
FAQs

An ActiveYards aluminum fence or gate system properly set in concrete footings with good drainage lasts 20 – 30 years in Central Texas, but the parts where it meets a new addition (brackets, transition panels, post bases) should be checked annually because the house and the fence move at different rates through our hot-wet-dry cycles. Call (903) 623-1966 if you want us to inspect the transition points.
Yes, in most cases we can re-set posts, replace brackets, and re-align panels without replacing the whole run. If the panels themselves are bent or the powder coating has failed, replacement makes more sense. We’ll tell you the cheaper option, not the one that pads the invoice. Call (903) 623-1966 for a straight answer.
Most post re-sets and short panel replacements take one day on site, not counting concrete cure time. A full fence relocation around a new addition takes two to three days. We schedule the fence work in sequence with the framing so you’re never left with an open property line overnight.
We keep common bracket sizes, post caps, and gate hardware in our Austin inventory, and we order OEM ActiveYards panels and posts with a short lead time when the job calls for an exact match. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for interior scope tied to the addition, so one crew can handle the full project.
If you’re planning an addition or ADU in Austin and need the ActiveYards fence line to work with it, not against it, call (903) 623-1966 for a free estimate. We’ll send Isaac Pruett or a named, background-checked technician to the site, measure what’s there, and hand you a written price before any work begins.
