IKO Driveway & Pavers: The Austin Owner’s Guide
If you’ve got failing IKO pavers or a driveway surface that’s cracked, settled, or separating, here’s the short answer: we stock IKO-compatible paver systems and install driveways and paver surfaces in Austin for $7,000 – $18,000 depending on square footage, base conditions, and paver grade. Most paver driveway installations take 5 – 10 working days from tear-out to final compaction. You typically notice the failure first as a low spot that holds water after rain, a paver that rocks underfoot, or an edge course that’s started to wander into the lawn.
We’re an independent Austin contractor, not an IKO dealer or affiliate. That matters because we’ll tell you straight whether your IKO product can be salvaged or whether the base under it has failed and the smart money is on replacement rather than patchwork.
Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO manufactures concrete paving stones and slab systems sold through building supply yards across Texas, not through big-box retail. Most Austin homes we work on have either the IKO Mega line (oversized rectangular pavers, 24″ x 24″ or 24″ x 36″, often used for driveways) or the Cambridge profile (smaller 4″ x 8″ and 8″ x 8″ units, common for walkways and patios). The third line we see in Mueller and Hyde Park is IKO Stone, a tumbled paver that’s more common on patios than driveways.
How to identify yours: flip a loose paver and look for the IKO stamp on the underside, usually near one corner. If it’s worn off, measure the face dimensions and the thickness. IKO driveway pavers run 60mm to 80mm thick. A 60mm paver under a driveway is undersized for Austin’s clay soil, and that’s one of the most common compatibility gotchas we find. The base was never built for our freeze-thaw and drought-expansion cycles, so the pavers crack or separate even though the paver itself is fine. For aftermarket replacements, Techo-Bloc and Unilock make dimensionally matched units we can blend with existing IKO work, but we’ll always tell you honestly when a color match will be close enough versus when you’re better off replacing a full section.

Signs Your IKO Driveway & Pavers Are Failing
- Rocking or wobbling pavers. The paver’s bedding sand has washed out or compacted unevenly beneath it. Left alone, the unsupported paver will crack within a season or two of vehicle traffic.
- Low spots that hold water longer than 20 minutes after rain. Water pooling on a paver driveway means the base has settled unevenly. In Austin’s clay soil, trapped water expands and contracts through every wet-dry cycle and accelerates the problem.
- Widening gaps between pavers. Sand-filled joints erode from rain and pressure washing. When joints exceed roughly 1/4 inch, pavers begin to shift laterally, and edge restraints start to fail.
- Edge courses spreading into the lawn or flower beds. The plastic or aluminum edge restraint was never pinned deeply enough, or it’s been hit by mower decks and foot traffic. Once the edge fails, the rest of the driveway loosens in sequence.
- A paver cracked straight through the center. That’s almost always a base problem, not a paver problem. It means the paver was bearing load over a void or an inadequately compacted base layer. Replacing just the paver without fixing the base guarantees a repeat crack within a year.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In Austin, a paver driveway installation runs $7,000 – $18,000 depending on three things. Square footage is the big one, then access (a tight Mueller alley or a backyard paver patio with no machine access costs more because base material has to be moved by hand), then the paver grade itself. IKO-compatible pavers sit in the mid-range: you’re not paying Techo-Bloc or Unilock premium pricing, but you’re also not buying big-box pavers that fade unevenly in three Texas summers.
A typical mid-size paver driveway replacement, around 600 – 800 square feet, falls between $10,000 and $14,000 installed. That price includes demolition and haul-away of the failed surface, excavation to proper depth, a compacted aggregate base, bedding sand, the pavers, edge restraints, polymeric joint sand, and final compaction. We gave you a written price before any work starts. You won’t find a change order on the final bill because a base turned out worse than expected. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if anything isn’t right within a year of completion, we return and make it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
A homeowner can safely do two things before calling us: measure the square footage of the failed area and note whether the damage is isolated to one section or spread across the whole surface. That helps us give you a realistic range over the phone. What we don’t recommend is replacing individual pavers or re-sanding joints yourself. The reason is the base. If the base under those pavers has failed, which it usually has by the time you notice symptoms, pulling a paver and setting a new one is cosmetic work that fails within a season. You’ll be out the time, the paver cost, and the $80 – $120 in materials, and you’ll still need the base rebuilt.
Tell me what’s wrong with it. We’ll figure out what it actually needs. Call (903) 623-1966 and describe what you’re seeing. If it’s a small isolated failure, we’ll tell you that, and you can decide from there. If it’s a base problem, we’ll tell you that too, and you’ll know a patch won’t buy you anything.
FAQs

With a properly built base, IKO driveway pavers in Austin typically last 20 – 30 years before the surface itself shows meaningful wear. The base underneath typically lasts 20 – 25 years in our clay soil before differential settling becomes visible, which is why we build bases to exceed the minimum spec from the start. Call (903) 623-1966 for an assessment of your specific driveway, and an estimate is free.
In some cases, yes: isolated edge failures or a single cracked paver can often be repaired without replacing the full surface. But when water is pooling, multiple pavers are rocking, or joints have opened across a wide area, the base has failed and repair means a full rebuild. Call (903) 623-1966 and describe what you’re seeing. We’ll give you our honest read and a written price either way.
Most residential paver driveway replacements take five to ten working days from demolition to final compaction and sanding. Rain can add a day or two, especially in spring. We’ll give you a schedule in writing before the work starts, and a live person answers our phone around the clock, every day, so you’re never waiting until Monday morning for an update.
We source paver materials through our supplier relationships, including IKO-compatible lines, plus Techo-Bloc and Unilock for aftermarket matches, and we handle ordering and delivery as part of the job. We won’t leave you with a half-finished driveway waiting on a materials order. Call (903) 623-1966 for a quote, or ask about which paver lines we currently have available.
