IKO Roofing: The Austin Owner’s Guide

We stock and install IKO-compatible roofing components across Austin, with most IKO shingle repairs running $400 – $1,800 and full IKO roof replacements landing between $8,000 and $20,000 depending on roof size and slope. Most homeowners discover an IKO part has failed when they spot a shingle in the yard after a storm, or when granule loss starts showing up at the bottom of a downspout like black sand. If you’re seeing bare spots on your shingles, curling at the edges, or water staining on interior ceilings after heavy rain, you’re probably looking at a failed IKO shingle or underlayment, and we can usually match it within a day or two of inspecting the roof.

Which IKO Models This Applies To

A remodeled family room with new windows and a window seat

IKO has run several shingle lines through Austin homes over the past two decades, and the part you need depends on which one is on your roof. The Cambridge line is the most common we see around Austin, and it comes in two sub-lines worth knowing: the standard Cambridge architectural shingle and the Cambridge Cool Colors series, which carries a higher solar reflectance rating and holds up a little better under the Texas sun. We also work on Marathon and Royal Estate roofs, both of which are heavier dimensional shingles, along with the older Aristocrat three-tab line that shows up on homes built before roughly 2005.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know: IKO’s architectural shingle colors are not interchangeable across lines. A Cambridge “Weatherwood” looks subtly different from a Marathon or Royal Estate in the same name, and mixing them on one roof plane is obvious from the street. Before you order anything, check for the bundle wrapper in your attic or garage, or send us a photo of the shingle profile and we’ll identify the line and match the color. We install genuine IKO shingles, and we also carry quality aftermarket ridge caps, flashings, and underlayments that meet IKO’s published installation specs. That said, we’re an independent Austin contractor, not an IKO company or franchise, so our recommendations are based on what holds up in Central Texas, not on a brand playbook.

Signs Your IKO Roofing Is Failing

  • Granule loss showing up as dark sediment in gutters. IKO shingles shed granules slowly over their life, but a sudden pile of black grit after a season of hail or wind means the UV-protective layer is thinning and the asphalt underneath is starting to cook. Once you can see the fiberglass mat in patches, the shingle is nearing the end of its service life.
  • Curling at shingle edges or corners. In Austin, this usually means the shingle’s adhesive strip has let go during a heat cycle and the shingle is no longer lying flat. A curled shingle is the first thing to rip off in a wind event, and it also gives water a path underneath neighboring shingles.
  • Bare spots where granules used to be, especially on south- and west-facing slopes. The Austin sun is relentless, and the south and west planes of a roof can degrade two or three times faster than the north side. If one slope looks bald while the others look okay, the roof was likely hit with decades of direct afternoon heat, and those shingles are toast.
  • Water staining on ceilings or around ceiling fixtures after heavy rain. This often traces back to a failed IKO underlayment or flashing rather than the shingles themselves. The shingles look fine from the street, but the felt or synthetic barrier underneath has cracked or the pipe boot has dry-rotted, and water is finding its way through.
  • Shingles in the yard after a storm. That’s not normal, even in a Texas thunderstorm. If shingles are coming off, the roof’s seal has failed or the shingles were never nailed correctly, and the wind is now doing demolition for you. Every shingle missing is an open entry point.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled primary suite with built-in wardrobes and a window seat

For IKO roofing work in Austin, a roof repair runs $400 – $1,800 depending on how much decking and underlayment is involved and whether we’re replacing a few shingles or re-flashing a pipe or valley. A full IKO roof replacement runs $8,000 – $20,000, with most Austin homes landing in the $10,000 – $15,000 range for a straightforward tear-off and re-shingle. The main cost drivers are roof size, slope, number of penetrations like vents and skylights, and whether the decking underneath is sound or needs sections replaced.

Every quote we write in Austin includes the full line-item breakdown before work starts: shingles, underlayment, ice and water shield where code requires it, nails, flashing, labor, and haul-away of the old material. You’ll see the exact price wrote out, no surprises. Our roofing work is covered by our written guarantee, which states plainly what’s covered, what’s excluded, and for how long: 365 days from the completion date. If something fails in that window, we come back and make it right at no cost to you, no dispute process.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things you can safely check yourself before calling us. Get a ladder and look at the shingle profile from a few feet away: are edges lifting, are granules collecting at the gutter openings, is anything visibly torn or missing? That tells you what you’re working with. But walking on an IKO shingle roof in summer to pull a bad shingle is where DIY goes wrong fast. Austin shingles get hot enough to soften the asphalt, and standing on them can cause damage you didn’t have before. And if your issue is a leak around a pipe boot or valley, the failure is often underneath the shingles, not on the surface. You’ll replace a shingle that wasn’t the problem and still have water coming through.

Isaac Pruett learned years ago that the fastest way to the right fix is a straight diagnosis first. Tell me what’s wrong with it. We’ll figure out what it actually needs. Call us at (903) 623-1966 and one of our verified crew members will come out, identify the IKO line and color, and put a written number in your hand before any work begins.
