Schluter Driveway & Pavers: The Austin Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Schluter-compatible driveway and paver edge trim, drainage profiles, and transition strips across Austin, with most swap-outs running $400 to $1,800 installed depending on the length of run and what’s underneath. Most homeowners find out a Schluter profile has failed the same way: the edge lifts after a heavy rain, the trim separates from the paver bed, or a section starts rattling when a car rolls over it. The good news is this is rarely a full re-do. In most cases, we can pull the failed section, reset the base, and lay in a new profile the same day we’re out there.

We’re an independent Austin remodeling and hardscaping company, not a Schluter affiliate. That matters because it means we stock what actually fits, not just what one brand’s catalog says should fit.

Schluter Driveway & Pavers: The Austin Owner’s Guide

A remodeled primary bathroom with a soaking tub and walk-in shower

Schluter is best known in the tile world for waterproofing systems and edge profiles, but their hardscape line, including the Schluter-Systems BARA and TROBA drainage profiles plus their aluminum and stainless paver edging, shows up on a lot of higher-end Austin driveways and paver patios. If you’ve got a Schluter profile on your driveway, pavers, or the transition where a paver patio meets a concrete walkway, the typical installed replacement in Austin runs $400 to $1,800, and most jobs are same-day once we’ve matched the profile. Homeowners usually discover the failure after a storm: a strip lifts, water pools where it didn’t before, or a paver starts drifting out of line. That’s a profile that either lost its anchor or was never seated deeply enough for our clay-heavy Austin soil.

The fix is specific. You don’t just glue a loose strip back down and call it done. You have to address why it let go in the first place, and that’s where our experience matters.

Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter’s hardscape and exterior profile lines fall into a few families worth knowing. The BARA series handles edge termination and expansion joints where pavers meet walls, steps, or slabs. TROBA profiles are the slotted drainage channels you see at the low edge of a paver driveway where water is meant to leave the surface. For paver-to-paver and paver-to-concrete transitions, Schluter’s aluminum and stainless steel edging profiles run in standard lengths, usually 8’2″ (2.5 meters), with a range of visible top flanges from a thin 3/16″ reveal up to a beefier 1/2″. If yours is gone or bent, you can identify the replacement by measuring the exposed top width and the height of the vertical leg that drops into the paver bed.

One compatibility gotcha we run into regularly in Austin: Schluter’s stainless profiles are the right call for driveways because they hold up to vehicle weight and de-icing salts better than the aluminum versions, but people sometimes grab aluminum by mistake and it won’t survive a single Texas summer of expansion cycles against concrete. If you’re replacing a profile on a driveway that sees cars, not just foot traffic, the stainless option is the one worth paying for. We keep the common BARA and TROBA sizes on the truck, and for unusual or discontinued profiles, we measure, order, and are back within a week.

For OEM versus aftermarket, our honest take: for Schluter profiles, OEM is almost always the better buy. The dimensions are consistent, the anchoring leg geometry is designed to lock into their specific base anchors, and aftermarket knockoffs tend to use thinner gauge metal that waves after the first hot stretch. We’ll install either, but we’ll tell you the truth about the difference before you spend a dollar.

Signs Your Schluter Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • The profile edge is lifting at the paver line. This usually means the base anchors have pulled loose or the concrete footing underneath has shifted. Austin’s clay soil expands and contracts hard through the year, and that movement is enough to torque a profile out of its seat.
  • Water is ponding behind the profile instead of draining through it. TROBA drainage channels clog with silt and leaf debris, especially under live oaks. Once the channel stops moving water, the paver bed underneath saturates and the base starts to wash out.
  • A section rattles or clanks when a car drives over. That’s a profile that has separated from its anchor but hasn’t pulled free yet. The sound is metal shifting against concrete. Left alone, the profile will kink or crack.
  • Pavers along the edge are starting to drift outward. The profile’s whole job is to contain the paver field. When it’s no longer holding the line, you’ll see a slow creep at the border within a couple of weeks.
  • Visible corrosion or pitting on the top flange. Aluminum profiles in contact with soil and moisture will oxidize over time. On a driveway, road salts from winter trips north plus Austin’s humidity can accelerate it. If the surface is crusty and flaking, the structural thickness is already compromised.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Austin, a Schluter profile replacement on a paver driveway or patio lands in the $400 to $1,800 range installed. The range depends on three things: how many linear feet you’re replacing, whether the sub-base under the removed section needs repair, and whether we’re working with the stainless or aluminum profile. A short aluminum patio edge might run $400 to $700 all in. A long stainless driveway profile with damaged base repair can push toward $1,800.

What’s included in our price: the profile itself, new anchors, resetting and recompacting the base under the affected run, and re-seating any pavers that shifted. We don’t do verbal numbers that grow on the final bill. The written price you get before we start is the price you pay, unless you ask to add scope. Every replacement we do carries a written guarantee for 365 days from the completion date. If that profile moves, lifts, or fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. No dispute process, no fine print runaround. That’s our 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it applies to every hardscape repair we touch.

DIY or Call Us?

There are honest things a homeowner can do first. You can pull the leaves and grit out of a TROBA channel and see if the water drains again. You can tap a loose profile gently with a rubber mallet and see if it seats back down. You can take photos and measurements so the person you call knows exactly what they’re walking into. What you shouldn’t do is pull the profile out and start digging into the base. The moment you disturb the compacted paver bed, you’ve turned a minor edge repair into a full section rebuild, and now you need a plate compactor and an eye for slope. That’s not a Saturday project, and it’s not worth a thrown back.

If the profile on your driveway has failed, call us at (903) 623-1966. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a quick swap or something deeper, and we’ll give you a straight number before anything gets scheduled.
