Moen Bathroom Remodeling: The Austin Owner’s Guide
Moen bathroom remodeling in Austin typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, depending on whether you’re replacing a single failing fixture or gutting the whole room down to the studs. We stock Moen-compatible trim kits, cartridges, shower valves, and tub spouts on our trucks, so a leaking Moen faucet or a shower that won’t hold temperature is usually a same-visit fix. Most Austin homeowners call us after noticing water pressure drops, a handle that sticks, or rust-colored staining around the tub spout and can’t figure out whether the cartridge failed or the valve body is shot.
Which Moen Models This Applies To
Moen splits its bathroom lines into a few families, and the part you need depends on which one you have. The Posi-Temp series is the most common in Austin homes built after 1990, using a 1222 or 1225 cartridge and a pressure-balancing valve that prevents scalding when someone flushes a toilet elsewhere in the house. The Moentrol line uses a 1423 cartridge and gives you separate volume and temperature control. The newer M-CORE series uses a 1213 cartridge and requires Moen’s M-CORE valve body; you can’t drop an M-CORE trim kit onto a Posi-Temp valve, no matter how similar the handles look. If the chrome escutcheon plate has a small rectangular tab underneath the handle, it’s likely M-CORE. If the handle pulls straight out and twists, it’s Posi-Temp. Matching the cartridge to the valve is the single most common mistake we see in Austin DIY repairs: homeowners buy a universal cartridge, force it in, and crack the valve body, which turns a $60 part into a $1,200 wall-opening job.

Signs Your Moen Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Dripping from the spout or showerhead: A worn cartridge seal lets water weep past, even when the handle is fully off. The drip usually gets faster over a month or two, not all at once.
- Handle sticks or turns hard: Mineral buildup in Austin’s hard water (we see calcium carbonate levels above 180 ppm in most of Travis County) glazes the cartridge body, making the handle fight you every time you turn it.
- Water temperature swings between hot and cold during a shower: The pressure-balancing spool inside a Posi-Temp cartridge is sticking, so it can’t compensate when a toilet flushes or a dishwasher starts. That’s the part doing its job, just slowly.
- Water won’t shut off completely: The stop-check valve inside the cartridge has failed or debris has lodged in the seat. This is a full replacement situation, not a cleanup.
- White chalky buildup around the trim plate or tub spout: A slow leak at the diverter or behind the escutcheon is evaporating on the chrome, leaving Austin’s limestone-heavy mineral residue behind. If left alone, that seepage sits against drywall and rots it from the inside.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
If the failing Moen part is a cartridge, handle, or tub spout, the job is usually $150 to $450 installed. If the valve body itself is cracked or corroded, or you’re upgrading the whole shower system, that’s where the $9,000 to $28,000 bathroom remodeling range comes in. At the low end, you’re replacing a fiberglass surround, swapping in a Moen Posi-Temp valve in its original location, and keeping the same footprint. At the high end, we’re moving plumbing, waterproofing with a Schluter system (that’s the orange membrane that keeps water from reaching your studs), tiling floor to ceiling, and installing a new Moen M-CORE fixture with multiple body sprays. Every quote is line-item: the Moen part priced at retail, the labor broken out, the waterproofing and permits listed separately. You get a written price before any work starts, and the workmanship carries a 365-day warranty from the completion date.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re comfortable shutting off the water at the valve under the sink or at the house main, you can absolutely swap a Moen cartridge yourself with a cartridge puller (about $20 at any Austin hardware store). Pay attention to which way the notches line up, and don’t force it. Where DIY goes wrong is when the cartridge is seized from hard water, you put muscle into it, and the brass retaining clip grooves strip out. Now the valve body is ruined and you’re cutting drywall. That’s the threshold where I’d call us. If the part inside the wall is what failed, not the part you can hold in your hand, call (903) 623-1966 and we’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a cartridge or a valve-body situation.
FAQs

Most Moen cartridges last 8 to 12 years in Austin’s hard water before the seals wear or mineral scale makes the handle sticky. If your home is on a private well in areas like Dripping Springs or Lakeway, expect closer to 6 years without a water softener.
No, the cartridge is a sealed unit; the internal seals and springs aren’t sold separately. Moen designed it to be swapped, not rebuilt, and at $40 to $65 for a genuine OEM cartridge, replacement is always cheaper than attempting a repair that won’t hold.
A cartridge replacement takes 45 minutes to an hour in most cases. If the valve body needs replacing or you’re reconfiguring the shower plumbing, that’s a 2-to-5-day project depending on tile and waterproofing.
We keep Moen 1222, 1225, and 1213 cartridges, Posi-Temp trim kits, tub spouts, and shower arms stocked on our trucks throughout Austin. For M-CORE valve bodies or less common finishes, we can usually have the part in hand within one business day.
No. The written price you approve is the price you pay. If we open the wall and find a rotted stud or a failed valve body we couldn’t see, we stop, show you what’s there, and give you a written change order before we touch it. No surprise invoices.
