Silestone Home Additions & ADU: The Austin Owner’s Guide
Silestone surfaces in a new addition or ADU typically run $4,500 to $13,000 installed here in Austin, depending on square footage, edge profile, and the series you choose. We stock and install Silestone-compatible countertops, backsplashes, and shower surrounds for home additions and accessory dwelling units, and our crew can usually template and fabricate within two to three weeks once the cabinets are set. The part most owners call about isn’t actually the slab itself. It’s the seam or the edge failing because the original installer didn’t account for Austin’s temperature swings and the way slabs expand and contract in unconditioned spaces during a Texas summer.
Tell me what’s wrong with it. We’ll figure out what it actually needs. Sometimes that’s a full replacement slab. Sometimes it’s a seam repair, a re-polish, or re-caulking against a wall that’s moved. We’ll tell you which one it is before you spend a dollar.
Which Silestone Models This Applies To

Silestone is manufactured by Cosentino, and the home addition and ADU work we do covers their full current lineup: the Eternal Series, the Sunlit Days collection, the Loft series, and the classic Suede and Polished finishes. Older slabs from the 2000s and early 2010s, often labeled “Silestone Quartz by Cosentino” on the underside, are also in scope. Those older slabs are the ones we see failing most often in Austin ADUs, because they predate the current resin formulations and tend to show hairline cracking near stove cutouts and sink rims after a decade of thermal cycling.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss: Silestone slabs are manufactured in two thicknesses, 12mm and 20mm, plus a 30mm option for select colors. If your existing island is 12mm and you’re adding new perimeter counters, you need to match that thickness or every seam and edge detail will be visibly off. The second gotcha: finish matters. A Polished finish reflects light and shows scratches more readily in a bright Austin sunroom. A Suede finish hides daily wear far better in a rental ADU, which is a selling point if you’re planning to lease the unit.
On OEM versus aftermarket: Silestone is a specific engineered quartz product, not a generic brand like “quartz countertop.” You can’t buy a generic slab and call it Silestone. If someone offers you “Silestone-compatible” material at a deep discount, what they’re usually selling is a different quartz brand with a similar color. That’s fine if you know that’s what you’re getting. It’s not fine if the invoice says Silestone and the slab isn’t. We’ll show you the Cosentino label on the slab before it gets cut.

Signs Your Silestone Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
- Hairline cracks radiating from a sink or cooktop corner. Austin’s heat and the expansion of the resin binder in the slab create stress at the sharp inside corners. Cracks there mean the cutout wasn’t radiused properly or the slab was forced into place against an out-of-square cabinet run.
- A seam you can feel with a fingernail. Seams should be flush and nearly invisible. When the counter shifts because the ADU’s floor settled, the seam opens up. That’s a common issue in Austin’s clay-heavy soils, especially east of I-35 where foundation movement is a fact of life.
- Chalky, dull patches that won’t polish out. Household cleaners with acid or bleach etch the surface and strip the gloss. In an ADU with a tenant, you can’t control what gets sprayed. The fix is a professional re-polish or a honed refinish, not a magic cleaner.
- Water staining at the backsplash-to-counter joint. If caulk fails there, water wicks behind the slab and into the cabinet or drywall below. By the time the stain shows, the damage underneath usually costs more to fix than the Silestone itself.
- The island edge is chipping at the overhang. Kids, bar stools, and moving day have one thing in common: they hit the counter edge. Chipped Silestone edges can be repaired if the chips are small. Large fractures mean a replacement slab section.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
| Scope | Installed Price Range (Austin) |
|---|---|
| Countertop replacement only (small ADU kitchen, 30-40 sq ft) | $4,500 – $6,500 |
| Countertop replacement (full kitchen in an addition, 50-70 sq ft) | $6,500 – $11,000 |
| Island slab replacement with edge profile | $3,000 – $7,000 |
| Backsplash replacement to match Silestone | $800 – $2,500 |
| Full addition or ADU counter package (counters, island, backsplash) | $9,000 – $13,000 |
These Austin ranges include tear-out of the old surface, template and fabrication, slab delivery, installation, seam work, edge detailing, and cleanup. What drives the price difference: the series you choose, the thickness, the number of seams, and whether there’s a waterfall edge or a complicated sink cutout. We provide a written price before any work begins, and that price does not change unless you change the scope. Every Silestone installation we do is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the seam opens, the polish fails, or the slab shifts within a year of completion, we fix it at no cost to you.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely do yourself: check whether the seam is the problem or the slab is. Run your fingernail across it. Put a flashlight against it. If you can feel a step or see light through it, the seam has separated and that’s a repair, not a replacement. You can also check whether the slab is sitting flat by sliding a piece of paper under it at the cabinet joints. What you should not do yourself: attempt to lift or move a Silestone slab. These slabs weigh between 15 and 20 pounds per square foot. A 50-square-foot island top weighs 750 to 1,000 pounds. Dropping it means broken fingers, crushed toes, or a shattered slab. Silestone fabrication and seam work requires specific tooling, dust control, and training. We have all three, and every member of the crew that shows up at your Austin home is a background-checked, uniformed professional whose name and photo you receive before the visit, under the Threshold Standard.
If you’re not sure whether what you’re seeing is a seam issue or a slab failure, call (903) 623-1966 and describe it. We’ll tell you over the phone what we think it is, and if a visit is worth your time.
FAQs

Silestone in a climate-controlled part of an Austin home can last 25 to 30 years before it looks tired, but in an ADU that isn’t kept at a consistent temperature through the summer, expect visible wear and potential seam issues in 10 to 15 years. The thermal cycling from uncooled summers is what ages those slabs prematurely. Call (903) 623-1966 if you’re seeing cracks near cutouts and we’ll tell you whether it’s repairable.
Yes, most hairline cracks and small edge chips can be repaired with color-matched epoxy and re-polished so they’re nearly invisible. A large fracture through a sink rail or an island that’s split from front to back is a replacement. Get a free estimate by calling (903) 623-1966.
From template to installation, expect two to three weeks for a Silestone replacement in Austin. Templating takes about an hour, fabrication runs seven to ten days at the shop, and install day is usually four to six hours. You’re without a counter for only the install day, not the whole wait.
We work directly with authorized Cosentino distributors and can pull most current Silestone colors from local Austin stock rather than waiting on a container from overseas. If your color is discontinued, we’ll match the closest current offering and show you a physical sample before you commit. Call (903) 623-1966 to confirm availability for your specific series and color.
