Wellborn Kitchen Remodeling: The Austin Owner’s Guide
Wellborn kitchen remodeling in Austin typically runs $14,000 to $45,000 for a full replacement of doors, drawer fronts, and hardware on an average 10×12 kitchen, with most jobs completed in 2 to 4 weeks depending on cabinet count and whether we’re also replacing countertops. Homeowners usually find us after a drawer glides off its track, a hinge has stripped out of the cabinet face, or a door won’t stay closed no matter how many times they adjust the screw. You don’t have to live with a kitchen that fights back every morning. If your Wellborn cabinets are failing, we match the part, price it honestly in writing, and get it fixed without a surprise invoice at the end.
Common discovery routes: you open a drawer and it drops a half inch, you lean on a door and feel it shift, or you notice the soft-close feature has stopped all of its softness. In Austin’s climate, wood and MDF respond to humidity swings, and that causes Wellborn cabinet parts to wear faster than they do in drier markets. The good news is most failures are isolated to a hinge, a slide, or a face frame section, not the entire run of cabinets. We’ll tell you straight whether your repair is a $400 job or a $14,000 replacement, and we’ll put it in writing before we touch a tool.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. manufactures several lines: Premiere (their budget-friendly entry), Estate (mid-tier full-access frameless cabinets), Wellborn Custom (semi-custom built to your measurements), and Wellborn Premier (their most used line for full-home projects). Mason Remodeling Co Austin is an independent remodeler, not affiliated with Wellborn, but we stock and install parts compatible with all four lines, plus the older Wellborn Forest and Wellborn Classic series that pop up in Austin homes built in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners hit: Wellborn changed their hinge cup drilling pattern at least twice over two decades. The older doors used a 26mm cup depth; the newer ones use 22mm. If you try to mount a new hinge in an old door without the correct cup offset, the door will sit proud of the cabinet face and never close flush. Another one: European cup hinges on Wellborn doors are often stamped “WB” followed by a four-digit date code. That four-digit code corresponds to the batch year, not a part number. The actual part number is on a small white sticker inside the cabinet box, on the rear panel, left side. Look there before you buy anything from anyone, and if there’s no sticker (common in Austin kitchens that have been through a remodel or two), we can match by measuring the hinge spacing and the door’s thickness. Bring us a drawer box or door if you can, we’ll match what you have to what’s actually still manufactured. If your line has been discontinued, we’ll tell you that too, both older and newer part options.

Signs Your Wellborn Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- A drawer sags or drops when you pull it open. The undermount glide’s retaining clip has worn or snapped, usually on drawers that hold cast iron or heavy pots. This is the most common fix we make in Austin kitchens, and it’s usually a $120 to $280 repair, not a cabinet replacement.
- A door won’t stay closed, or closes with a slam. The soft-close piston inside the hinge has lost its hydraulic fluid, usually between years 8 and 12 of daily use. Once the piston fails, the hinge becomes a plain hinge with no damping, and that’s when the slamming starts.
- The hinges feel loose even after you tighten the screws. The screw has stripped out of the MDF or particleboard face frame. This is particularly common in Austin where humidity cycles cause the board to expand and contract, loosening the screw’s bite each season. We repair this with a drilled insert and wood-specific screw, not just a longer screw that will fail again.
- You see a fine sawdust-like powder under the drawer boxes. That’s about MDF failing, or the drawer runner wearing against the carcass. It’s a sign the cabinet box itself is starting to fail. We’ll tell you whether it’s patching or replacing.
- The cabinet doors have shifted, and now they hit each other when you open adjacent doors. The oven hinge or the cabinet side panel has warped from heat or humidity exposure. This is a structural issue, not just a hinge adjustment, and needs to be looked at by someone who can tell whether the sealer has failed.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Full Wellborn kitchen remodel in Austin: $14,000 – $45,000. That covers new doors and drawer fronts, new hinges and soft-close slides, trim and molding, and installation. If your cabinet boxes are still sound and you’re keeping the existing countertops, you’re likely in the lower half of that range. If we’re replacing countertops at the same time, expect $2,000 – $6,500 extra for countertop installation depending on material. A kitchen island installation runs $3,000 – $10,000 if you’re adding one, and backsplash installation adds $800 – $2,500 if you’re replacing your tile. A smaller Wellborn refresh on a compact kitchen runs $9,000 – $20,000.
We deliver a written price before any work starts. Every time. Not a verbal “we’ll figure it out as we go.” We’ll give you line items for the parts, the labor, and what’s excluded, so you know what you’re paying for and what you aren’t. Every project includes our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something isn’t right within a year of completion, we make it right at no cost to you. And if a repair or installation fails within that year, we’ll come back for free. No dispute process, no conditions, no “that’s normal wear.”
DIY or Call Us?
You can check a few things yourself first. Open a drawer, see if the glides are tight and visible. Look at the hinge screws. If the loose screw is on the door side, you can hand-tighten it and see if it holds. If it’s stripped, don’t keep turning it; you’ll just widen the hole. Replacing a soft-close piston with a “universal” hinge from a big box store is where most Austin homeowners go wrong. The hole spacing is usually off by a millimeter or two, and the cabinet door ends up sitting crooked permanently. In a kitchen where the doors are supposed to line up perfectly, that millimeter matters.
For anything involving gas, electrical, or load-bearing work near your walls, call us. Our crew will do the structural evaluation. And for any hinge or glide issue where the door actually falls off, call us. A falling cabinet door can injure someone, and a repair that doesn’t hold means you’ll pay twice. We’re at (903) 623-1966, and we’ll talk it through with you before you commit to anything.
FAQs

Fifteen to twenty-five years for the boxes, with hinges and glides needing replacement around years 8 to 12. Austin’s high humidity swings shorten the life of MDF and particleboard components, especially in kitchens without good ventilation. Usually yes. Hinges, slides, drawer boxes, and door faces can be repaired or replaced individually without a full cabinet replacement. If the cabinet box itself is failing (water damage or MDF breakdown), replacement is the honest answer. Call us at (903) 623-1966 and we’ll tell you which one you’re actually facing.
Most Wellborn refreshes take 2 to 4 weeks from template to completion, depending on whether we’re replacing countertops and whether the kitchen is a galley or an open plan. We’ll give you a written timeline with the written price before work starts. Get a free estimate at (903) 623-1966.
We keep the most common Wellborn hinges, soft-close pistons, drawer glides, and mounting screws on our truck, and we can source any Wellborn-specific part through our suppliers.
